NFPA 25 inspection frequencies: what the standard organises, and what "annual" means

Sprinkler, standpipe and fire pump work runs on a frequency matrix, and almost every page that reproduces it leaves out the one detail that changes how you schedule against it.

Read this before the table. This page did not obtain the text of NFPA 25. The standard is sold rather than published, the standards body's own article on the subject returned an empty page, and two state agency documents that restate the frequencies were published in a format that would not convert to text. What follows is what labelled secondary summaries consistently report, one of which cites Table 5.1.1.2 of the 2023 edition. Treat it as an orientation to how the standard is organised, and treat the edition your authority has adopted as the answer.

A frequency is a window, not a date

This is the detail worth the whole page. "Annual" in this standard is reported as a minimum of nine and a maximum of fifteen months between activities, and the longer frequencies carry both a floor and a ceiling in the same way.

That matters to anyone building a schedule. A system that treats "annual" as a hard 365-day anniversary is modelling the standard wrong in both directions: it can flag work overdue that is not, and it can hide the fact that a job done at fourteen months was still inside the window while one done at sixteen was not. The correct primitive is a due window with two ends.

What the 2023 edition is reported to have added

Secondary summaries report a self-testing provision for waterflow alarms in the 2023 edition: an annual self-test, with a physical flowing-water test still required every three years. As with everything on this page, confirm it against the edition your authority has adopted rather than against this page.

Why this page is thinner than the ones ranking above it

Because it says where its numbers came from. The frequency tables published across this vein are confident, detailed, and almost never cite an edition or a section, which makes them impossible to check and quietly wrong in any jurisdiction working to an older edition.

The honest version is shorter. If you need a table you can rely on, you need the edition your authority has adopted, and the authority is the place to get it.

What to confirm, and with whom

Ask your local fire marshal which edition of NFPA 25 is in force and whether there are local amendments. Ask your sprinkler contractor which edition they are working to, and ask them to write the frequency and the window on the report rather than only the date.

Where the two answers differ, the authority having jurisdiction is the one that governs.
